The Final Answer?

The answer to our discussion seems to be that there are only questions. Perhaps it is a testament to the individual nature and independence of Americans that we all have a slightly different idea of what it means to be American. So, what truths can we take away from our journey this semester?

  1. That we are dynamic individuals may be one truth about Americans. None of us are exactly the same, yet we value many of the same things and, collectively, we seem to be very similar. Perhaps this is why we are referred to in elementary social studies as a tossed salad. Perhaps the truth that we are arrogant can be displayed in our desire to discuss ourselves on a blog. Very few of us included a discussion of any of our cultural neighbors. It's true that I know that I am proud to be American, even though I'm not proud of everything about my fellows, but perhaps that too is a truth. That we are all on a journey together.

  2. I think that one things that we all have in common is the fact that we have our own values. Although the media has impact the way we dress, the way we talk to our family members, and the way we express our selves it does not mean that we have totally forgot of who we are, where we came from, our cultural values and much more. In other words, the truth is that we seem to become more selfish individuals who although the media keeps on impacting our cultural identity we dont seem to do anything to stop it.

  3. One truth is that we are all Americans. We may disagree about things that happen or that the media says but we can all come together as American citizens in the end. We have the freedom to believe what we want to believe. If someone agrees with what the media is trying to say and another person does not that is ok. In the end we can all agree that we are together in that we are American citizens

  4. I feel that as Americans we are all united as one. We all may have different feelings and opinions about certain things, but that is perfectly okay. Not every American is going to agree on the same thing, but we will always back eachother up when the times are rough.

  5. No matter what beliefs a person in this country has or what race they are, during tough times every American is nationalistic. This is seen during times of war. Everyone supports the soldiers and has pride for their country. After the attacks of the world trade center, Americans certainly felt the need to step up and unite together.

  6. Everyone in this country has differnet beliefs on different subjects. Isn't that the purpose of a blog? We each share pur own thoughts on these questions and some of them may be different because people dont always agree with eachother. In America, unlike other countries, we have a voice to express our opinion freely. In rough times in America, such as the attack on September 11th 2001, we all came together as one and stood tall because at that point we knew that we were all Americans and we were all grieving for eachother. This shows how although as Americans we can differ in opinions, we can still come together as one in the end.

  7. The freedoms we are given as Americans creates many different ideas and opinions on issues within in society. The freedom to express our feelings and opinions helps create individuality and new ways thinking as wll as new ideas. Although our freedoms create disagreement and controversary, American society is one and always comes together in times of trouble as well as times as triumph. I think that our different views and ideas helps prove that Americans are not afraid to express their minds and ideas because of the freedoms we are granted. I think this blog shows individuality, freedom, as well helps to show what it means to be an American

  8. Many people want to be Americans because we have so much freedom in choosing what we would like to do. Nobody tells us what we have to like or where we have to work we choose what we want to do.

  9. one of the very few things that all of us americans stand for is the fact of trying to succeed in life, whether it be legal or illegally. At the same time, one wouldnt desire to become american if freedom wasnt part of the plan, and so i think a sense of pride is something alll of us americans carry as well.given the oppurtunity, i think the basic principles, or "truths", that can be derived from americans in general is prejudice ,ignorance, and having a beleif system.although not all americans agree on what defines an american, we do , however, think about certain topics similarly.

  10. America is an attractive country to many immigrants because of the freedoms and opportunities that are available to the citizens. Popele of all races come to America because of our tolerance of different people. American values are what unites our people regardless of our conflicting opinions.

  11. All people are different, though some may be similar, they are still very different. I believe that many people do have the same values and they believe in the same things. People do stand out when they try to contribute ideas or make change to society which happens all the time. People either accept or fight these ideas due to that fact that everyone is different so they may not agree. Although individuals have a variety of differences, I believe that they have similar values and things that are important to them even though they may look at it a different way.

  12. One truth about Americans is that everyone is different and has different ideas but yet we cherish the same things as a country such as independence and nationalism. Although we have different beliefs, at times we all come as one to form a nationalistic nation. I agree with Waldman, I too believe that after September 11th, we all formed as one and felt the need to unite as a country.
