  1. To me, American cultural identity contains many elements. These elements include some arrogance, priviledge, earned and unearned superiority, pride, diversity, and freedom of expression. I value very much that I am endowed with the ability to craft my own identity and culture, as are my neighbors, friends, and even my family members.

  2. To me, The American culture identity is compose by:

    1. Arrogance
    2. Competitiveness
    3. Authority
    4. Leadership
    5. Independency

The American culture identity to me means to have the influence over others when it comes to becoming more independent. Americans like when others are followers and one of the ways they can keep this going is through the media.

  4. I strongly believe that American cultural identity is derived from a few certain characteristics: competitiveness, desire to be successful, a strong sense of nationalism, and individuality. American cultural identity means, personally, that I am granted a set of rights from the time I am born, promising equality and opportunity. It is up to me, however, to work towards the point of success.

  5. I view the American Culture to be some sort of a myth Americans live up to. Americans see the Culture to be full with pride and courage and freedom. I see it as a country trying to live a life that isn't really theirs because in reality, America is one of the most diverse cultures in the world. Instead of trying to cover that by having military characteristics, we should flourish and flaunt our diverse cultures. We should be proud we have Latin Americans living with the Chinese and the Irish living with African families. We have too much color to hide and cover for our "role model" culture. The American Culture is a diverse prize!

  6. i agree with Mariel on what characteristics make up the american cultural identity. i feel as though everything is based on chasing the american dream. Not everyone has the same vision of the american dream, and so the methods to obtaining this success may be a little different to everyone. For instance, if you go to new york city, and then to beverly hills, you will see people from all walks of life doing many different things, living very different lifestyles, but they all have one thing in common; to obtain the american dream. In other words, success is the foundation of american culture.

  7. I feel that the defining characteristics of the american identity is the american dream. Everyone has a different opinion about the american dream, but they are all positive. People always want to be achieving their goals, which is what the american dream is. The american cultural identity to me means that i can be myself and express my opinions to everyone and vice versa.

  8. The defining characteristics of the American cultural are diversity, independence, and freedom of expression. The American culture is considered the "melting pot". This particular culture also provides the opportunity for the people to freely speak their minds and their opinions. We are independent in that way. The culture is also independent due to the fact that we are very diverse in one society and that people live differently than others.

  9. I feel that culture is made up of many things that are good and bad. There are many ideas that are in society that can go either way for people. I believe that the defining characteristics of the American Culture are the things that are learned. I feel culture is made up of tradition and how it's changed. There are many characteristics of culture including freedom, privilege, and a main goal for people in order to succed

  10. I believe american culture is identified by the ability to do what you want, freedom. Whether you decide to be goth, skater, prep, etc. you can act however you want and I'm very proud to be in a nation that allows that.

  11. There are some very interesting characteristics that I would classify as American. First and foremost is a sense of independence. From the history of your country to the American system of measurement (similar to Imperial system), Americans like to be categorized as American.
Second and third would be a confidence in your country and an arrogance of population. The majority of Americans are confident in the cultural values and morals associated with the USA while maintaining a very "American-esque"arrogance about the superiority of American culture and its application to other areas (such as the Middle-East). Finally, the fourth characteristic that I find uniquely American is competitiveness. Other countries have their niche sports or markets that they are comfortable referring to as their own but Americans have an unnatural thirst for expansion in everything they do. They want to be good at as much as they can and they actively try to enlist themselves in everything that isn't naturally American (I'm looking at you soccer). A lot of you view America as a cultural melting pot or an area of diversity but I would have to disagree with that. There are many cultures far more diverse than what you find in the USA. That's good for you however, as the more diverse you get the more watered down your original culture becomes. If it wasn't "American culture" what would it be?

  12. I believe that American cultural identity is defined by the following: pride, arrogance, diversity, competiveness, and freedom. Of these I feel that competiveness and freedom are the two most important. After all the point of going to college is to better yourself so you can get a great job, so college is part of the competitive side of life. Without freedom we would be nowhere. Freedom is everything.

I believe that freedom and opportunity are the most important. Everyone has the opportunity to create their own identity in America. They can be who they want to be and express themselves how they want. It is a privilege to be able to go about life the way you want to.

  14. American culture is the meshing of many different opportunities into one mass. American culture can provide steady income, adventure, risk, and the everlasting search for improvement. The American dream relates to what people are looking for when they search for the freedoms in American culture. American culture to me means a blend of different cultures coming together and learning from one and another to prosper with the greatest intent for success. This view of American culture allows for all walks of life and religions to add insight to the American way of life.

  19. American culture has some negative and positive characteristics. Our country has a lot of pride but also a lot of prejudice and stereotyping, still to this day. We have an abundant amount of freedoms that we take for granted every day. For example we have the freedom of speech and religion. However there are many negative aspects of our culture. We have a high percentage of eating disorders and divorce rates. Luckily we have many laws and organizations that help address these problems though. All in all, I am very proud to identify myself with being American because we are a very spoiled country.

  20. The American cultural identity consists of many different characteristics, some positive and others negative. I believe that the defining characteristics of American cultural identity consists of: arrogance, power, nationalism, freedom, dignity and determination. For me, American cultural identity means individualism. Each person is allowed to find their own identity and become their own being. They have the ability to form their own opinions and speakly freely about them. Although there are still stereotypes in almost any case, for the most part American culture has allowed people to become their own person without determining who they are to begin with. There is such much diversity that it is almost impossible to feel completely different from everyone else, since everyone is different from one another.

  21. I agree with Deana in the sense that there are many positives and negatives that come with American culture. On one side, there are the ultimate freedoms that Americans are born with, such as the freedom of assembly, press, religion, and speech. Some countries may look to Americans in jealousy due to these freedoms, because they do not get to express themselves the way Americans can. Although Americans have these freedoms, the nation was founded on a system of prejudice, which hasn't ceased yet. In the beginning of the nation, slaves were a normal way of life until the mid-19th century. Even after the abolition of the practice, rights weren't bestowed to African Americans until around the 1960's. These prejudices still hold somewhat true, as many people are still very racist in our country. Even still, America is classified as the land of the free, and that's how I believe it to still hold true.

  22. There are many elements that American culture consists of. I feel that the most prominent characteristic of American cultural identity is freedom. There are many rights that Americans are given at birth and no one can take them away. People are able to speak their minds and voice their opinions. It is the freedom to live the life you want and be the person you want to be that makes America so great.

  23. I view the prominent characteristic of American culture is freedom. This country was founded on the premise of freedom, and that’s what our fore-fathers strived to gain for their country. Today, it is what our soldiers fight for overseas, and it’s what people come here for. People have and continue to immigrate here for the freedom and the God-given rights that we all possess as Americans. For centuries America has been run on the premise of freedom and the hope to give each and every person their own freedoms.

  24. I believe that there are many characteristics of being an American. There are also many positives, as well as negatives. I agree with Courtney in saying that the main characteristic of American culture is definitely freedom. There are multiple freedoms that Americans are naturally born with such as religion and speech. I also believe that one of America's biggest problems is stereotypes, which I consider to be a negative issue.

  25. I believe that American characteritics are agression, freedom, pride, and greed. America is an agressive nation, we work hard and we strive to be the best. We are a nation built upon being free, we are free to practice any relgion and say anything we feel. We are also built on pride, our nation is proud of what we do, we suport our troops and we are proud to be where we are and the country we are today. Although American's are also greedy, we want everything, because all our other characteristics make us feel as though we should have everything. To me cultural identy is what the culture shows as a whole, and what the nation represents without sterotyping.

  26. I think American characteristics include freedom, equality and greed. America is a country that revolves around freedom. There are documents all about this concept and everyday it surrounds us. There is freedom of religion, of the press, of speech, and more. I think that all of these entitled freedoms are a part of the strive for equality. Equality being a characteristic of America doesn't necessarily mean that it is a given. I think equality is being fought for everyday and there are new ways of trying to enforce this. Greed is the negative part of our society. Everything revolves around money or the exchange of goods. Sure good deeds are done but there is usually a reason or expectation behind this.

  27. I think that there are many defining characteristics of American culture. I believe that American culture consists of freedom, competitive nature, and the freedom to pursuite one's happiness. Freedom is enforced by our government and every citizen of the U.S.A. has a right to it. Competitive nature is the way our economy runs and is the driving force behind how Americans make money. The pursuite of happiness is the freedom to make a living how one chooses to.

  28. American characteristics include arrogance, greed, and equal amount of hard work and laziness, and a sense of entitlement. But its main focus is that of freedom. You can be who you want to be and do what you want to do. But you have to do those things with in the limitations of the law. To me it lets you express yourself in a unique matter that is significant to you and only you. You cant be anyone else but you, you can try to live like others or your idols but at the end of the day your you and their them.

  29. I believe that American characteristics include many properties such as independence, greed, arrogance, and freedom. Some of these are the basis that are country was created on and what we value everyday but sometimes take for granted. in these characteristics there are good in bad, that we have a free and independent nation but then the greed and arrogance is the bad part of it. What this means to me is that we feel entitled to just being the best and getting are way and when we don't we use are power so that we do get are way. This is the arrogance in are nation sometimes we have to just let it go or look at the reality instead of make up are own false one. And greed is a big one since for us its all about money and being rich and sometimes are values get mixed up with being rich then the ones that really mean something to us.

  31. I think that there are many defining characteristics of being an American. Some of these characteristics are freedom, aggression, pride, and greed. There are documents that were written for the purpose of ensuring freedom to everyone. Americans have freedom of speech, religion, and press. All of these freedoms that Americans are entitled to add to the pride of living in America and also the aggression to other countries. There is aggression towards other countries because the countries do not offer the same privileges to their people as America does. Greed is the negative characteristic of Americans. One person is always trying to get to the next step before anyone else does. Almost everything revolves around the transferring of money. Americans will do almost anything to get ahead in life.

  32. I disagree with those who said that one of the defining characteristics of Americans is arrogance. In some cases it may be a characteristic, but I certainly don't think it defines Americans as a whole. I believe that an element of American cultural identity would be pride, but not arrogance.

  33. There are many defining characteristics of American culture, but there is one that seems to be the center of them all. Like what lucky said, I feel that all Americans have that drive to be successful in whatever we do. With success comes independence, leadership, competitiveness, and self pride.

  34. I think that there are several defining characteristics of American culture such as freedom, individuality, pride, and expression.I think that America is all about freedom and expressing oneself in any way they wish to.Because everyone expresses themselves differently, everyone is different from each other in some way. If Americans weren't able to express themselves, then this country would be in a downfall. In many countries, the citizens have limited forms of freedom and expression and they hate their lives because they can't express their feelings or views.

  35. Though there are many characteristics defining American culture, I believe American cultural identity comes from wanting to be the most successful and powerful, that's why we are such a competative and strong nation

  36. There are many characteristics that define American culture such as freedom, pride, and superiority. However I believe the most important and the one that best defines American culture is freedom. America is given so many freedoms and libertys that others are denied. These freedoms allow American society to do anything and everything that we wish to. They give us to speak our minds and be free of judgment or fear. Freedom allows America to constantly change and to constantly thing of new ideas or way of doing things. These freedoms influence and impact every aspect of American society. They allow the other charactericts such as pride and superority to show and be other major aspects of American society.

American Cultural Identity to me, means that I am able to be my own person, without being judged.
